A color space is a mathematical model used to define colors. The color space is designed in 3D due to the existence of 3 factors that determine the color. Different color spaces are used in color display and processing devices. It is the CIE Color Space developed out of 5 known color spaces by the CIE (International Commission on Illumination), which provides color measurement for all colors.

The CIE Color system is used to estimate the color difference between an identified standard color and a sample color.

Where; L*: is the luminous value. It is 0° for black and 100° for white. It varies between two values for other colors. The higher the value L* is, the brighter the color is.

a* and b*: are the color coordinates.

+a stands for the red direction,

-a for the green direction,

+b for the yellow direction, and

-b for the blue direction.
